Lake Michigan Recreation Area between Manistee and Ludington reopened on Wednesday. The area had previously been expected to be closed for pavement preservation and it is reopening ahead of schedule.

The campground and day use area were scheduled to be closed from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 for pavement preservation.

According to a news release from the Huron-Manistee National Forests, national forest officials were notified that pavement preservation had been postponed.

“Upon notification, the (Huron-Manistee National Forests) took immediate action to reopen the site ahead of Labor Day weekend,” reads part of the release.

The release stated that people from the national forest worked with American Land and Leisure to “continue on-the-ground preparations for the arrival of visitors.”

American Land and Leisure is a concessionaire that operates the campground under a special use permit with the national forest. Reservations for camping reopened on Wednesday online at recreation.gov.
